It’s not only Batman who can roam around the streets of Gotham City, now you can do it too. Warner Bros. have collaborated with Nokia to create a 3D map of Gotham City in order to promote the upcoming Batman flick, The Dark Knight Rises. The Nokia Gotham City map is now open to the public. You have 2 options to navigate Gotham City – a 3D view or Map view.

Batman's Gotham City in 3D - Nokia Maps

The 3D mode gives an aerial view of the tall skyscarpers, bridges, the surrounding rivers and the misty streets of the Gotham City. You can also check out some famous location around the city, including the Arkham Asylum, Wayne Tower I, City Hall and the Gotham City Stadium. The special locations have there own seperate view. There’s also a contest at each location. You have to find the clues in order to win exclusive The Dark Knight Rises prizes. The 3D view, though not very detailed, is enough a bait to lure any Batman fan.

On the other hand the Map view is very detailed, giving you the particulars of each and every location around the city. The Map view mode allows you to see the names of all the places in Gotham City. It’s more of a travel guide really. Everything ranging from rivers, buildings, streets, blocks have been mapped.

The maps allow you to zoom in and move around. If you’re a Batman fan, then this is a must view thing. There’s no way you won’t appreciate the work they’ve put in.

Experience Gotham City in 3D.

Android Gingerbread on the N900 http://tech-junky.com/mobile/android-gingerbread-on-the-n900/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=android-gingerbread-on-the-n900 Fri, 04 Feb 2011 15:01:56 +0000 http://tech-junky.com/mobile/android-gingerbread-on-the-n900/ Continue reading Android Gingerbread on the N900]]>

Nokia N900 sure is one solid piece of hardware. The features are great and the quality of the device is superb but the area where the cellphone lacks is it’s OS. While Maemo seemed like a promising OS but lack of support on Nokia’s part didn’t let the N900 flourish.

It’s actually Google’s Android that’s making it to the top these days. The OS is widely popular and is grabbing the market share like fire. Developer support for the OS pretty good, so the Android Market is flooded with apps.

Now what if we pair the N900′s quality hardware with Android? Certainly seems like a great combination. Well this is possible!

I recently installed Android Gingerbread on my N900 on dual boot, meaning I can both use the default Maemo as well as Android. This is possible through a project called NITDroid. The project is active and the people involved are working hard to make Android a better experience on the 900.

While the OS works fine on the device, support in some areas is missing. For instance the call feature is missing. You can make/receive a call but won’t be able to hear the other person. However you can send/receive text messages. The camera app is also not working. But these issues will hopefully be sorted out in the future.

I’ll be posting a tutorial on how to install Android on your N900 soon. So stay updated!

Update: Install Android on N900

The above is a video that can be an early, leaked teaser for Nokia‘s MeeGo based N9. While we can’t authenticate it as real but the video’s production quality is fine and the design of the slider phone resembles the N8.

Hands-On: Nokia N900 http://tech-junky.com/mobile/hands-on-nokia-n900/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hands-on-nokia-n900 Tue, 05 Jan 2010 15:06:06 +0000 http://tech-junky.com/mobile/hands-on-nokia-n900/ Continue reading Hands-On: Nokia N900]]>

Recently got a Nokia N900 and I just have one word for it – ‘awesome’. This phone deserves to be called the best from Nokia.

I’ve not done a very detailed review of the the N900 but here’s a short summary of what I’ve felt about the device during my recent use.

Design:

When I saw the pics of the phone on the web I was concerned about it’s size, particularly the bulk but now having the phone in my hand I can say that it’s a really good, solid device. The phone fits comfortably in the hand and has a nice design too. The N900 also has a slide-out 3-row backlit QWERTY keyboard. The keys may be a little squashed together but it’s perfectly fine to use.

Display:

The device has a 3.5″ 800×480 pixel resistive touchscreen display. The touchscreen is quite responsive and the overall display is gorgeous. The display has a nice UI and transformation effects. You also get to have 4 desktops that you can switch between and customize.

OS and Applications:

The N900 is based on the Linux based Maemo 5 Operating System. The OS is quite fast andsupports multitasking. I haven’t experienced any slowdown or freezes till now. (Hope this continues!)

There are not many apps available for the device as of now but that’s no big deal as the device is new and apps are come up. Still, there are some cool applications available at the official Maemo website.

Camera:

The phone has 5 MP, 2576×1936 pixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Dual LED flash. The camera has a lens cover and the shutter button is also at the right place. I found the camera quality to be good. The camera interface is a little limited with only a few options but for a normal user that should suffice.

Multimedia:

With 32GB of onboard memory you get to store loads of media on the device. The audio quality is great, thanks to it’s stereo speakers. The in-ear earplugs bundled by Nokia sound great too.

Watching videos on the 800×480 pixel screen is also a pleasure. Another cool thing about this device is the support for a large number of video formats. So forget about first converting your videos before adding them to your phone.

Mozilla is also going to officially release Firefox for the N900. The beta version is currently available for download.

Nokia has got it right with the N900 this time. Almost everything seems to be in place. This looks like some serious competition to the iPhone.

I’ll keep you updated with more on the device.

Nokia announces 5730 and 5330 XpressMusic and 5030 XpressRadio handsets http://tech-junky.com/mobile/nokia-announces-5730-and-5330-xpressmusic-and-5030-xpressradio-handsets/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nokia-announces-5730-and-5330-xpressmusic-and-5030-xpressradio-handsets Wed, 11 Mar 2009 15:06:18 +0000 http://tech-junky.com/mobile/nokia-announces-5730-and-5330-xpressmusic-and-5030-xpressradio-handsets/ Continue reading Nokia announces 5730 and 5330 XpressMusic and 5030 XpressRadio handsets]]>

Nokia just gave information on its upcoming handsets, namely the 5730 XpressMusic QWERTY, 5330 XpressMusic slider, and the lowly 5030 XpressRadio candybar. All the three handsets will have different price-points and will let you access the Nokia Music Store pretty easily. Among the trio, the 5730 is a top-end device and is Nokia’s first QWERTY handset optimized for both music and gaming with dedicated audio and N-Gage keys. It is expected to be available in Q3 2009 at a price around €280.

The 5330 is a slider phone and will be available in Q3 at around €160. It adds illumination effects to it’s design plu

s a 3.5-mm jack and 26-hours of audio. The 5030 XpressRadio may not be very good looking but it is Nokia’s first phone with an internal FM radio antenna. This eliminates the need for a headset or external speakers. With that as its major selling point, it will most probably head towards emerging markets. It will be out in Q2 at around €40.
