How to fix it: My PC reboots when I tell it to shut down

When a system failure occurs at shutdown, Windows responds by rebooting. So instead of telling you about the cause, it gives the impression that it cannot differentiate between restarting and shutting down.

You can prevent Windows from doing so. To do so:

1. Select Start | Run or Press Windows Key + R.

2. In the Run dialogue box, type ‘sysdm.cpl‘ and press Enter.

3. Click on the Advanced tab, and then click the ‘Settings’ button in the ‘Startup and Recovery’ section.

4. Now under the ‘System failure’ heading, uncheck ‘Automatically restart‘.

This will stop Windows from restarting but it won’t fix the main problem, i.e. the system failure causing the reboot. Still, you might come across an error message that you can research to find a solution.

The issue is likely to be caused by a hardware or driver issue. If you got into this trouble after adding a new peripheral or updating an old driver, try removing the recent addition. Check the vendors’ Web sites for updated drivers for your new hardware. You can even use the Device Manager to roll back to the older ones if you think an update has caused the problem.
