27 Mar 2011 In: How-To

How about using your Sony PlayStation 3 Eye Camera as a desktop webcam? Well certainly not a bad idea considering the amazing 640X480 resolution, plus the ability to run at 60 FPS or even at 120 FPS.

It’s pretty easy to set up PS Eye on your PC. You just need to download the CL Eye Platform Driver and install it. It will take care of the rest. Follow these steps to get
started:
1. Download the CL Eye Platform Driver.
2. Make sure the PS Eye is not plugged into the USB port.
3. Open the setup file you downloaded and install the driver.
4. Once done plug-in the PS Eye into your PC and you are ready to go.

To use the PS Eye with Skype, go to Tools > Options > Video Settings. There will be a Select Webcam options. Choose PS Eye from the drop down menu to enable it.
You can use the PS Eye with all your favourite IM clients like Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and others.

Sales of smartphones in the last quarter of 2010 shows that for the first time since its release,Google’s Android platform has overtaken Nokia’s Symbian in terms of market share, with Android achieving 32.9% compared to Nokia’s 30.6%. Apple and Blackberry both noted a drop in sales and the new boy on the block, Microsoft trails the field with a poor 3.1% of the market share.

This puts Android in a great position, as the operating system which sells the most phones attracts more providers to manufacture phones that can be used with it. Whilst Nokia ruled the mobile phone world in the late 20th century, the times they are a-changing. Nokia are the soul manufacturer of phones on the Symbian operating system, which is fine if you love the N7 but for those of us wanting more choice and variety the wide range of handsets available on the Android platform makes operating system choice a no brainer.

Whilst the Android platform apps market is still playing catch up to Apples thriving App Store, with around 90,000 apps available on Android compared to over 300,000 in the App Store, there are significantly more free apps available for Android and a wider choice of developers working on new ones. Android phones support a wider range of file formats for music, video and documents, although they do lose out on Apples Lossless audio file format, which allows super compression of CD quality music into MP3 sized files without losing any of the audio playback quality.

As the number of manufacturers supplying the OS increases, the price of the handsets gets driven down. The latest mid-range offering from popular manufacturer HTC, the HTC Gratia promises to be one of the smallest, most powerful smartphones available for the money. Whilst it is not in the same league as the much revered iPhone 4, the HTC Gratia outstrips the performance of most of the handsets in its class and with a price tag of less than half that of the iPhone. And with ever better and cheaper phones becoming available on the Android platform, such as the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Ace, the competition is going to have to up its game if they are to keep up with Google’s wonder horse.

With the likes of the HTC Gratia and the Samsung Galaxy Ace setting the bar for smartphone providers, Apple, Microsoft, Nokia and Blackberry are going to have to work hard to catch up with the value for money these little phones and many others like them can provide on the Android
platform.

I recently wrote a post regarding the possibility of installing Android Gingerbread on the Nokia N900. Well here’s the guide to install it.

1. Firstly you will need a MicroSD card.

2. You will need to enable all the repositories from the App Manager (Extras-Testing, Extras-Devel, Extras)

3. Install rootsh and Leafpad from the App Manager.

4. Then open x-terminal and type the following:
root
apt-get update
apt-get install nitdroid-installer
y
y again if it asks again.
Wait for the package to be installed

5. After that download Nitdroid Gingerbread and Nitdroid Kernel
Copy the downloaded file to “/home/user/MyDocs”

6. Next open x-terminal and type:
root
cd /home/user/MyDocs
bzip2 -d gingerbread.tar.bz2
cd /home
mkdir /and
cd /
mount /home /and
cd /and
tar xvf /home/user/MyDocs/gingerbread.tar
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-06_final1_armel.deb

7. Once done, type “leafpad /etc/multiboot.d/11” and press tab on your screen and then press Enter to open it in Leafpad.
The .item file shall open. Search for ITEM_DEVICE and if you are using an MMC the edit it to “ITEM_DEVICE=${INT_CARD}p2″ or if you do not have an MMC then it should look like “ITEM_DEVICE=mmcblk0p2″.

8. You can additionally install some Gingerbread updates too.
Download Codec Update and VOIP Update and save them in MyDocs.

9. To install these update, type the following commands in x-terminal:
root
mount /home /and
cd /home/user/MyDocs
bzip2 -d gingerbread_update(x).tar.bz2
cd /and
tar xvf /home/user/MyDocs/gingerbread_update(x).tar
(Be sure tp replace update(x) with ‘update1′ for installing the 1st update and ‘update2′ for 2nd update.)

That’s it. You’re done install Android Gingerbread on your N900. Slide open your keyboard and reboot your device. You’ll get two OS options at the startup screen. Select Nitdroid and enjoy the Gingerbread delight!

Apple yesterday unveiled it’s next generation iPad. The guys over at Cupertino have brought some subtantial changes with the latest iPad. The iPad 2 features a new A5 Chip incorporating Dual-core processors and up to 9X faster graphics. While the specs have been bumped up, the device still occupies the same low power as the original iPad and the battery life remains the same 10 hours.

Another new feature is the HDMI video out which provides output upto 1080p. You can also charge while using the HDMI out.

Apple has also announced new apps such as FaceTime which will allow you to call other iPad 2 owners or even your iPhone 4 pals. iMovie and GarageBand were the other 2 apps to be revealed, each costing $4.99.
